725. a remarkable old Afghan Ersari carpet
725. Provenance: Ersari, Turkoman tribes, northern Afghanistan
Size: 420 x 317 cm
Age: Circa 1950
Condition: Very good.
Notes: This is a very large carpet - a real room-filler. Soft, glossy hand-spun highland wool and a rich warm burgundy (madder-rich) field mark this beast out as a finer breed than many of the Afghan pillarbox-red filpai (elephant foot) one sees on the market. Would look fantastic in a room with a lot of dark (oak?) furniture. Similar designs have been woven by the Afghan Ersaris since the late 19th century to the present day.
