747. an earthy old Baluch Afghan rug
747. Provenance: Baluch (or affiliated), Herat region, Western Afghanistan
Size: 197 x 104 cm
Age: circa 1930
Condition: Excellent.
Notes: Eight well-spaced Turkoman inspired 'Tekke' guls, but unlike the weavings of their northern Turkic neighbours, the Baluch have intersperced them with oversized (as opposed to small) 'minor' Chemche guls. The dark colours are madder-rich and the handspun wool is soft and glossy. A very sweet piece. Woolen pile on wool foundation (as all true tribal rugs are).
