489. a one-off antique Tekke main carpet
489. Provenance: Tekke tribe, Turkoman Tribes, Turkmenistan/Central Asia
Size: 300 x 214 cm
Age: Circa 1900
Condition: Mostly good for its age and the overall impression is one of beauty. However, there are numerous areas of weakening of the structure, which have all been professioally secured on the back.
Notes: Despite the areas of structural weakness, this is supremely collectable and beautiful carpet. The wool is lustrous and soft to the touch, and the weaving is fine and intricate. The scale of the major Tekke guls is fantastic, as is their spacing in the field - both factors are in keeping with the carpet's age - not pre-1880, but not later than the turn of the century. The colours are just stunning - extremely rich shades of madder brown and red - and are natural. This is one of the very finest-looking Tekkes I have seen.
