333. A staggering Antique Bakhtiari main Carpet
333. Provenance: Bakhtiari tribe, SW Persia
Size: 403 x 320 cm (i.e BIG)
Age: Circa 1920
Condtion: Very good. Only several tiny patches of lost pile.
Notes: Bakhtiaris live in some of the harshest mountain terrain in Persia. They are nomadic pastoralists but weave rugs in many sizes. Perhaps because of the harshness of their environment, they have specialised in weaving rugs with gloriously naive garden designs. This is one splendid such main carpet, using only the most stunning vegetable dyes and excellent hand-spun wool. I love Bakhtiari rugs in general but this is a stand-out.
